Is it a metaphor for socialism… and our unparalleled ability to transform the environment for both good and bad. Michelangelo may be portrayed as the individual genus of the ‘Hero’ Artist with his [inset suitable adjective here] work, the man who worked into the virgin marble to release it’s magical form… form communicating what it is he alone could say; but I wonder if this concept of the individual genius holds true?? I doubt it’s a concept that he would have understood, but be that as it may, we in the 21st century we have taken this idea and ran with it… so in this series of paintings, I want to take the subject of the marble quarry at Carrera, the place where Michelangelo sourced the stone - paying respect to the many hands that formed this sublime sculpture in landscape. In this scene there is no overall genius at play, no guiding hand but that of utility… man has created this sculptured landscape over millennia, it is a product of the collective mind… a statement of what enormous power we have and what we can do when we put our mind to moving mountains.
But the mountains are only an excuse to use paint… everything - all concepts are but an excuse to use paint; the trick is to use it in an interesting way.
