In ‘the Little Settlement Painting’ series I am looking to produce a collection of paintings that describe modern Ireland in regards to it’s place in a global context… I started painting these paintings fresh out of art collage and at the time I wanted to find a way to describe the town I was living in as my college friends were moving away, going out into the bigger wider world… so the series was conceived as a collection of paintings depicting the various roads that led out of my town and these road paintings developed over time to become the little settlement series.

The series looks to capture the soul of modern day Ireland and describe what living in small town Ireland feels like in the early 21st century… these little settlements exist outside major cities and the cultural hotspots as seen on TV;  this is where people are born and raised in the hope of one day moving away - to Dublin maybe! or for the truly adventurous on to a new life overseas.

For the most part the paintings of the series depict the growing town of Gorey, about an hour south of Dublin… and as such, with the improving road network it is now one of Irelands fastest growing commuter towns, (therefore ironically Gorey is fast becoming a place that people from even smaller provincial towns move to in the hopes of finding a bigger better life…) and in a world where work opportunities are no longer limited by your location towns like Gorey are no longer as provincial as they were even 20 years ago… it is this change that I am now documenting with these works…  and using the larger subject as a metaphor for the changing face of modern Ireland as a whole.
