'A new phase of a never ending cycle' was painted way back in 2009 and was a reaction to the world that I saw as I looked out of my studio window. It is a small piece - intimate and painted with an immediacy that I hoped would reproduce a series of emotions that I couldn't even attempt to put into words.

The painting is bound with masking tape and prepared with black gesso as was my thing at the time, and the oil paint was applied thinly over permanent marker so as to allow the underlying drawing and words to bleed through.

One of the few paintings that I still have from the time following the financial crisis, when I look at this painting it serves as a reminder of just how productive my practice was during those lean years and I just hope I feel the same when in a decade's time I am in a position to look back on the paintings I make today.
